Coquina forms when shells of mollusks, trilobites, and brachipods on the ocean floor are buried, form sedimentary rock, and then are uplifted. This type of rock is also called fosilleferous limestone. This piece was collected on the beach and so has been surf tumbled; one face was polished to open up a window.
