KM 5, one year type. Minted at the San Francisco Mint, for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Silver crown, with the king on the obverse.
Although the original mintage was 500,000 pieces, over 4,000 in Hawaiian 1883 coinage was melted by the U. S. government after Hawaii was annexed in 1898, and this included 453,652 of the coins.  There are two additional melts which totalled over ,000 face value of Hawaiian coins, without a breakdown by denomination, and there was a major fire in Hawaii, in which a significant amount of Hawaiian coinage is believed to have been destroyed in the residential buildings. It is estimated that no more than 40,000 dollar coins survived.
