Description
Vintage, rare man’s, groom's wedding shirt, poncho made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has 8 deep blue, medium weight, indigo dyed, hand woven cotton strips sewn together, and then hand embroidered with colorful butterfly yarn designs on the front and back, as well as other linear designs, and the names of the bride and groom and/or family on the back; the neck opening has reinforced lining on it.Each of this type wedding piece I bought, have different symbols, names, and designs on them. Traditionally older, favorite family indigos are used and then newly embroidered by the mother of the bride, and pieces made for both the bride and female members as skirts/wrappers, and the ponchos for the groom and male famility members. I have seen many different designs, probably associated with different areas and Dogon tribes.
38” x 58”; Indigo itself and the embroidery are both in excellent condition, with no major damage that I can see; there may be a very few loose yarns that can just be pulled to the back side; fringe on ends as well as several rows of weaving and emboirdery to keep the bottom from unraveling.
All the works I will be listing are
hard to find, older indigo textiles in very good conditon, with the old dyed striped patterns, some in the old stitch and resist patterns, a few, rare embroidered works as well. All are clean, were used and are soft from wear and washing.
I was lucky to have “first choice” of several containers of indigos as they arrived directly from Africa, and have MANY I will be listing. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, but there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs.
